the thing is it does take time for a complete reversal, to bad for us because it flips a few times before it is stable again...meaning we could have no magnetic field at all some of the time, as it does it's thing...soo this is bad news for us not good lol... How long it will take for this to start? well as you can see by the rate of last update...it has started and continues it's course. The rate of speed seems to change...
Earth's magnetic field has a natural fluctuation. To measurement it once, or to take several measurements of it over the span of centuries is not sufficient data to predict an overall trend in the field strength. It has gone up and down in the past for no apparent reason. Its true Earths geomagnetic field is becoming weaker. It has decline 10–15% over the last 150 years and is accelerating in recent years. Geomagnetic intensity has been on the declined for the last 2000 years (down 35% in the last 2000 years) The rate of decrease and the current strength are within the normal range of variation as shown by the record of past magnetic fields recorded in rocks.
This is all sounding pretty slow to me. Scientist estimate it takes 10,000 years for a pole reverse this to occur. There really is no way to know when or if the earth will reverse poles or low long it will take. However a study published in 2012 by the German Research Center for Geosciences suggests that a pole reversal occurred only 41,000 years ago during the last ice age. They say the polarity changes took place over just 250 years! Here is a link to the article if you want to read it:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121016084936.htmIf the Germans are right about their study, it would certainly change our understanding pole reversals trends. I really don't know much about it but I'd speculate it could mean drastic weather changes around the world but at a rate of change that may not mean an immediate life or death situation for humans. Does it mean that the north pole will one day be in Egypt? I don't know. Considering humans inhabit the earth in both hemispheres all around the earth, I imagine weather will probably get worse for some and better for others. As the earths magnetic field weaken, parts of the earth will be exposed higher radiation levels (harmful amounts? idk.) Hopefully it turns into a tropical rainforest where I live and not Antarctica.
