Thinking about going to college for some form of physics, any ideas on what i should major in and why?

You should consider mechanical or aerospace engineering too. Its all about practical uses of physics in industry.

I wouldn't recommend majoring in physics unless you intend to get a PHD and do research type work.

This.

There are many Engineering fields that have a strong emphasis on Physics.
I majored in Electrical Engineering but by the end of that major I also had a major in Physics just because of all the required physics courses for Electrical Engineering.

But if you're insistent on Physics, I personally love Optics and or Electricity and Magnetism.
Because who doesn't love playing with high powered lasers.

particle physicists play with lasers too :D Well, high powered beams of particles. Kinda like lasers

also, there are jobs in the financial sector that can utilize physicists - well, any math oriented problem solver really. Quantitative finance is a big one, but I agree that engineering is far more practical

If ur gonna do quantitative finance just do an applied math major

If Ur doing physics stay with physics

Like others have said, if you want to get a PhD in Physics, then go into Physics. Solid state physicists are the most common PhDs. Atomic and Nuclear physics is cool, too. I always had a thing for Astrophysics too. But to be honest, you're not going to have to specialize during your undergrad. Your biggest decision will be whether you want to take classes that are more applied (e.g. applied mechanics, digital circuits) or more theoretical (quantum mechanics, astrophysics, thermodynamics).

If you don't want a PhD though, then you really should go into engineering. There are lots of different varieties and you can do just about anything through one of the fields. Just for example, if you choose electrical engineering, you could end up working in computer networking, artificial intelligence, alternative energy (or regular fossil fuel energy), digital signal processing, microprocessor design...
