i'm planning on going back to philippines for a 3 week vacation next year summer and one of my to do list there is to "climb mount penatubo"...
next to camping in the preserve thick jungle(s) in the philippine island.
me and few friends will be crossing at least 4 waterfalls on our trip so having something like that will really help.
i already have most of my supply for our trip but i know there's still stuff that i need so what ever light and convenient to carry will definitely help my trip.

How light you want to go with this depends on the type of water you are treating. If the water is clear and non-silty and you just want to kill pathogens like giardia, cryptosporidium, etc you can use a SteriPen:
http://www.rei.com/product/761906/steripen-classic-water-purifier-with-prefilterIt uses UV light to kill the bad shit in your water. The downside is obviously that it doesn't filter anything out of the water.
For backpacking I use a Katadyn HikerPro:

Some people like to get father out in the wilderness than is advised.
Why would you deny yourself a valuable tool?
I ask because what he is doing should dictate the kind of water treatment he uses.
