i think that on a more basic level, the fractal pattern is formed by local differences in air density

are there any good papers on that i can read? fractals are interesting to me.

no, sorry, i dont know of any. All i know is that the pattern is dictated by (minor) local differences in air density, if i remember correctly. Knownig discharge tubes use low pressure (hence low density) gas, the path of the electrons is that which follows the areas of lowest air density.

if i'm wrong i hope somebody would correct me.
