the brain is probably simply making an assumption of what the shade should be , using the surroundings as clues
there are famous experiments that show a banana under a pink light , where the only colour able to to be reflected is pink

when shown the banana thru a small cutout , unable to identify the object as a banana , subjects perceive it as being yellow
when the whole banana is visible , subjects perceive it as being yellow , even tho this is physically impossible

id also refer you to the famous inversion glasses experiment

Its very easy, the trick is in the paint. It changes color with light.
Theres nothing magical about it, theres even people that use this kind of painting in houses and stuff.

Negative.

This is your brain at play.

It's literally being fooled by the shadowing of the object and the surrounding stimuli and is over compensating for what it thinks it should be seeing given the circumstance.

If you don't believe me, open this picture in paint and copy the color from B. Then apply that color next to A and you will see that they are the same color.

Wait until you realize that we are all capable of being self-aware and we all have neurotransmitters in our brain that link our current thoughts to mental/physical health on top of whatever we're dealing with at the moment.

It's pretty awesome. I can laugh at myself raging in video games.
