download is the rate at which your computer receives data from an outside source. a good number here is at least 1MB/1024KB

upload is the rate at which you can send data from your computer to an outside source. good number here is at least 0.3MB/~307KB

ping is the time in milliseconds it takes for information to travel inbetween the source and destination. "good" number here is below 100ms

Also note that a Mb is 1/8 of a MB; the first is megabit and the second megabyte. Internet companies love to scam people since these are not common terms.
There's also pretty much no way to improve your internet except by switching providers or upgrading your speed with current provider, but you can close all other programs that use the internet to maximize what you currently have

Exactly right. I'm paying for 30Mb download speeds which means my downloads max out around 3.5 MB per second. Which is still pretty good, but when you see 30 and get 3-something, if you don't know what's going on you're probably going to be pretty angry.
