Density is just 'mass over volume.' In order to get the density of an object, you must know both its mass and volume.
King Hiero II had a crown that he suspected had been made with a combination of silver and gold by a shady goldsmith, and asked Archemedies to find out if it was true. Normally this would be easy - you just shape it to a measurable volume, weigh it, and badda boom.
However, since it was a crown and couldn't just be melted down into a square, he had to figure out some other way to measure that shit. Then when he was in the bathtub, he noticed the way that the water rose when he plunked his ass down in it, and realized that it was because of his volume displacing the water. So he realized that he could use his measurement of raising water to determine the volume of the crown, which made him run outside all naked and shit.
