dont worry folks, carbapenems can still kill em all
Hmmmmm not quite. Swedish cinical scientists have identified some resistant bacteria,
Klebsiella pneumoniae. That resistance is conferred by the enzyme New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) that inactivates a broad range of beta-lactam-based antibiotics, including carbapenems. In fact, some
E.coli resistant strains were isolated in Coventry, UK, as well. Given the genotype is transmitted through horizontal gene transfer, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about spreading of this resistance not only in the two known affected bacterium strains, but to others as well.
Oh No! Carbapenems do not rule them all anymore
