Quote
Wright and his colleagues found that of the 93 bacterial strains tested from the cave, most were resistant to more than one of the 26 different antimicrobials. And some bacteria were resistant to more than a dozen antibiotics used by doctors, such as telithromycin, ampicillin and daptomycin, which is currently a treatment of last resort to combat resistant infections. The cave bacteria were not likely to cause infection in humans, but could provide the genetic traits that confer resistance to that are.

That is both amazing and somewhat scary.

Was this a typo? Should it say "to those that are"? Or did I misunderstand this sentence completely?

I think it is supposed to be "to those."

It is pretty scary.

I know a few scandinavian countries the are cycling the use of their antibiotics to curb the growth of said resistance. Shame America is unaware of this.

That is pretty neat.

Something like this to come along and shake up the dogma of where/how transformation occurs is welcome in my book.

Hmmmmm not quite. Swedish cinical scientists have identified some resistant bacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae. That resistance is conferred by the enzyme New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) that inactivates a broad range of beta-lactam-based antibiotics, including carbapenems. In fact, some E.coli resistant strains were isolated in Coventry, UK, as well. Given the genotype is transmitted through horizontal gene transfer, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about spreading of this resistance not only in the two known affected bacterium strains, but to others as well.

Oh No! Carbapenems do not rule them all anymore :o
