Bored, and I wanted to make one of those cup/can phones with string. Something to mess around with during lulls in class.
But I figured that I might as well make it "good", gone are the days of terribly cut things drenched in Elmer's glue.
But then again I don't want to spend too much effort on this.

Reading around, I've read that using a tin can is less effective than a paper cup as the metal base can't move much as it is rigidly attached to the sides.
But then I thought that having paper sides would be less effective at resonating the sound than metal.

So would the best option be something with the side of a metal can with both ends removed, and a paper diaphragm for the string end?

Or what other readily-available materials would be best?

Thanks

I feel that your design would work really well, honestly. You could compare it to drums I suppose :P

Ah, thanks for telling me. It's just the reverse energy change. Something like drum skin or similar would also last longer than paper if I were able to find it.
Thanks again.
