The cost of a hard disk drive appears to be following Moore's Law, but when I look at the cost of solid state hard drives it is still extremely expensive.

How long do you think it will take for SSD prices to reach HDD's ? 2, 5, 10 years?

ssds obviously don't follow the same curve as normal hds because they're a completely different technology.

ssd prices scale with memory prices - and generally, we're talking about chips smaller than conventional RAM modules.

Technology never becomes obsolete.

There's always some yokel out there that will pay big bucks for "retro" hardware/software

They still do exist and have a following.

Said following would be willing to put some money on the table for those desired object.

Just because it's not prominent doesn't mean it's not desired.

Perceived value is a hell of a drug.

just because people still own things doesnt mean the technology isnt obsolete

thats just such a fraudulent statement in general

just because people still own things doesnt mean the technology isnt obsolete.

and besides the fact that you seem to have an misunderstanding of what obsolete means, there are plenty of technologies that no longer exist period.

for example, i just invented a unique device to poke my dog with, and then i destroyed it. that exact technology now no longer exist and will never be used again because the secrets die with me

and there are probably millions of things like that. they were just so shitty in the first place that you never new they existed to begin with

This isn't a post asking how you torment domestic animals... it's about the scale at which SSD's will grow in the future versus their relationship with cost and how quickly the cost of production will drop.

The reason I was asking is because I am curious to see when it will be common place for bottom line 'ultrabooks' to come with 256 - 500 GB SSD storage just like many notebook laptops are with HDDs currently....
