If a large enough solar flare tears through whats left of our magnetosphere right now, we can bet that most life on earth would be burned up.

In fact, one of the final bowl judgements in the book of Revelation talks about how all the green grass and trees, and life on earth would be burned up at the end of the age.

Just like with the planets that are constantly being "stripped" of what little atmosphere they have, we would be so done for, and I think this has happened before long ago. New creatures are placed down once its over & settled a bit, so they can advance for a little while.

It happens due to the galactic alignment where the sun goes through the plane and lets off an extra huge burst: (Happening again in DEC 2012)
