I have a roomate who's being a dick with our internet. He recently discovered how to torrent and does it all hours of the day.

Is there a way for me to get onto the router and limit his bandwith during the day/evening?

e: he is on a macbook if that makes a difference.

Sounds like this could be solved through polite conversation. Explain that bandwidth is limited and he needs to limit his use.

Use his laptop some time when he's not around and go into the torrenting software and manually set maximum up/down rates.

Otherwise there is PROBABLY a way to do it through the router interface.

I explained like a pie and him taking the largest slice. He constantly leaves it on, "on accident"

Get into the router settings:

http://192.168.1.254 (this is a local ATT router config address, not an outside link)

Look for settings that involve bandwidth priority, you may want to check your router manual.

That's not the IP he wants, I can guarantee it. The IP he wants is the gateway address which always follows x.x.x.1

Start --> Run --> type "cmd" --> type "ipconfig" (no quotation marks) in the box that pops up.

The IP address next to Default Gateway is the IP address of the router you're connected to. It's usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, depending on the brand of the router.

And the default username and password is usually something similar to Admin/Admin or admin/______ <-- no password at all. You can Google to find the default username and password for your exact router.

password and ip address are probably on the router itself
