The "scariness" lies not in the animals themselves, but in the part of the human brain which perceives them to be scary.

Mice are terrified of cats. Humans think cats are cute. It's all a matter of perspective.

Whichever force led to the creation of fear as a psychological mechanism in advanced animals is responsible.
