You can take any kind of iron filings, get yourself a rare earth magnet (neodymium).

mix the iron filings with oil such as olive oil... Put it in a dish, put the magnet below. The iron ore aligns with the magnetic field as much as it can while suspended in a fluid.

If you want to collect iron filings, take a strong neodymium magnet and run it through some sand a few times, you will collect it in no time.
