The mind is basically a computer can receive and send out information to the body. Why can't we insert our own perceptions. People have been taught how to block out the pain signals in the brain during torture, some people have even imagined themselves playing golf on their favorite courses and when they get out there games were tremendously better. With practice some people are completely able to not have any feeling or sight when something horrible happens. If people were taught to im sure they could say blockout hearing and imagine them hearing something else, don't we all basically do this now? When someone is irritating you block them out or you just think of songs and can basically hear them playing as if in your mind. This ability could be used on all senses even sight perhaps or smell, imagine it just being able to smell w.e you want at a single thought.
the mind is a mysterious place. Ask yourself what is the mind.
I beleive Neurons are also responsible for Sensation (touch, feeling, reactions, etc) so the question would really be. if your mind can block out these sensations, what happends to these cells? obviously your brain isnt reacting to it. i find these topics really interesting, and i will contact professor Paul bloom to see what his theory is on this.
he has previously made a video on how pleasure works, not related to this exact topic, but i think you would enjoy watching that lecture.
