I'm going to college this fall and wondering if engineering is a fun major, I know its a lot of hard work but I can do it and I like math and science, is it worth it in the end to be an engineer? Anyone have any advice?

Engineering is extremely broad. Do some research to see what field you're interested in. If you're strong in math and science and enjoy problem solving it might be a good fit for you.

good choice, engineering rules
in the beginning you will learn basic stuff which can be boring, but later on you will do cool stuff and you won't regret it

It's great if it clicks for you. You don't just have to be good at maths and physics, you have to like maths and physics, and be interested in technology. Best mathematician I know dropped out after first year after failing all the papers except for an A+ in the 2nd year maths paper he took extra.

There are several types of engineering you can do. The big branches (at least in NZ) and what the first year mainly consists of are:

Mechanical - Get good at drawing and free body diagrams.
Electrical - Get good at understanding kirchoff's voltage and current laws.
Computer Science - Get good at understanding the deterministic nature of computers.
Mechatronics - Get good at all of the above, watch iron man and play mechwarrior.
Chemical - Get good at chemistry. Make some moonshine.
Civil - Concrete. Rebar and concrete. Concrete bridges, concrete roads, concrete buildings.
Natural resources - Trees and biomass etc

I'm not an engineer but most of my friends are.

I'm at oregon state which is a massive (20k+ students) engineering heavy school

It's a lot of work, a fuckton of work, and some more work. If you make it in to pro school, you're probably set though.

Engineering is a great major if you're motivated and have good study habits

If you're like me and enjoy being a pothead who dosent wanna do shit, be a comm major or something.

Thanks for the reply's guys I forgot to mention I love to build/assemble things like my cousin just bought an elliptical and I loved putting it together and things like that, so would that be mechanical engineering? Also I heard there are no girls in engineering :( my school is 70% female though so I might get lucky...

It depends what you want in life, if you want a lot of money --> Do not go into engineering

Engineering is pretty okay but it seems to me that most engineering programs have 1-3 good professors and the rest bad. By good I mean they will teach you the idea, basis, and rules of the game and then have you solve problems where as the bad ones just say 'this is the way it is, crunch the numbers'.

Physics and Math on the other hand are more pure but like any department they have good/bad professors too. Physics and math on the other hand seem to have less bad professors in the sense of learning s,t. you know what you're doing. At the lower level its pretty much this is the way it is - deal with it. But as you get into sophomore/junior classes you start to understand the basis of everything even little things such as addition.

Engineering is awesome. I mean, it's not like it's gonna be outdated or overhauled by something else.. Not like manual-labor was overhauled by machines, which in fact were developed by engineers :)
