It's great if it clicks for you. You don't just have to be good at maths and physics, you have to like maths and physics, and be interested in technology. Best mathematician I know dropped out after first year after failing all the papers except for an A+ in the 2nd year maths paper he took extra.
There are several types of engineering you can do. The big branches (at least in NZ) and what the first year mainly consists of are:
Mechanical - Get good at drawing and free body diagrams.
Electrical - Get good at understanding kirchoff's voltage and current laws.
Computer Science - Get good at understanding the deterministic nature of computers.
Mechatronics - Get good at all of the above, watch iron man and play mechwarrior.
Chemical - Get good at chemistry. Make some moonshine.
Civil - Concrete. Rebar and concrete. Concrete bridges, concrete roads, concrete buildings.
Natural resources - Trees and biomass etc
