I've been reading up on this a lot and I'm very fascinated and to be honest... very convinced by it, it's defiantly worth a short read..

http://thevenusproject.com/a-new-social-design/resource-based-economy

The website over all is actually worth a read, very interesting ideas

For those that don't want to read, they are basically proposing getting rid of money completely... technology has advanced to much that basically machines can do almost anything so instead of paying workers everything should be ran by machines... there are enough resources in the world for people to have all the necessities required to live with high standards but many cannot afford it. So get rid of money... you'd obviously need to pay someone to make the machines in the first place but once they are made you wouldn't need to pay anyone any more, people wouldn't need to work... (I guess you'd need Doctors or something... not sure about their input on that )
We could easily produce a 'printer' that could make TVs.. they already have printers that make 3D objects by producing the layers separately. But because theres no money in the business they don't

A few of the main quotes from here are
Quote (Dat website)
At the beginning of World War II the US had a mere 600 or so first-class fighting aircraft. We rapidly overcame this short supply by turning out more than 90,000 planes a year. The question at the start of World War II was: Do we have enough funds to produce the required implements of war? The answer was no, we did not have enough money, nor did we have enough gold; but we did have more than enough resources. It was the available resources that enabled the US to achieve the high production and efficiency required to win the war. Unfortunately this is only considered in times of war.

Quote (Dat website)
Although air and water are valuable, in abundance they cannot be sold.

Quote (Dat website)
If all the money in the world were destroyed, as long as we have sufficient arable land, the factories, the necessary resources, and technical personnel, we could build anything and even supply an abundance. During the Depression, there were vacuum cleaners in store windows and automobiles in car lots. The Earth was still the same place. There was just no money in people's wallets and very little purchasing power.

I've only just started reading about this really so I may have made a few mistakes so I'd suggest researching it yourself

yeah i happen to really like the venus project

unfortunatly this idea will be a long time coming if it ever does go into practice. the mechanisms of captialism, or really any monetary system for that matter self perpetuate and its hard to just stop without total social collaspe

my sister got to work with one of those 3D printers on KU campus. it was so expensive the university didnt even own it. these print in plastic only. they can make any 3D shape, even with limited moving parts. crazy.

yes its an interesting idea but untill things are put into practice its really hard to tell what will happen.

it could go any possible way all depending on how its done.

i have a funny feeling , that the guys who own most the capital , will simply pay other men with guns to " sort things out " , if everyone decided there was no real good reason why some babies should be born poor , while others are born fantasically wealthy

 we have a 3D printer at my school, lol. it takes ages to print though

The parts to make the printers though cost hardly anything so could easily be mass produced. However because not many people use them people don't produce them, so the people that do produce them can charge stupid amounts :/

Another problem with the monetary system >.<
I highly agree with the Resource Based Economy being a way better choice than the monetary system

A RBE cannot co-exist with greed, and I have severe doubts about ridding the world of greed anytime soon.

Thing is people work for money. If you get rid of money there is absolutely no reason for anyone to work. So i don't see how RBE will work.

people dont eat money , or dress in it , or live in it
people were "working " along time before money was invented

but the fact is , the rich will protect themselves
