there are computer programs reverse engineered every day. the easiest example that came to mind.

Military Aircraft. Every country had a hardon for capturing other planes, and reverse engineering them.

Roswell, New Mexico. We reverse engineered a lot of the technologies found on the Area 51 craft.

One actual example I can probably think of is when the USSR received intelligence through their spies and were able to build their own planes and nuclear weapons (they didn't develop the atomic bomb on their own, and there's no way they went from A bomb to H bomb in the length of time they did without some reverse engineering, considering how long it took the US to do it)
