Your computer is telling you that it's able to communicate with your router, and that's why it tells you that you're Connected. When you're plugged directly into your cable modem, you're bypassing the router, and that's why you can get online.

The odds are pretty high that the problem is with your router.

Try turning off your router and your modem. Wait five minutes. Turn your cable modem back on. After its "Online" LED is on (the one that tells you it's done booting and it'll actually work), turn on your router with it correctly connected (an ethernet cable will connect from the cable modem to the Internet In port on the router; that's the one that's separated from the other 4 ports). After that's done booting, try connecting with your computer plugged into the router (the way it normally is).

If that doesn't work, you might need to reset the router back to its factory default settings and try again.
