Hey everybody, I'm an old PaRD rat in need of some help.

My problem is I am helping a patron at the library I work at and I cannot edit the text in her PDF document. I thought this could be for a variety of reasons so I told her to go home and I would be able to help her or steer her in the right direction. So, I got on my computer at work and downloaded a file on beer judging from the BJCP's official website.

http://www.bjcp.org/stylecenter.php

I can edit this file just fine, using the TouchUp Text Tool, so I'll be able to help this woman.

MY DILEMMA

The one thing bothering me is the file may be locked, yet I've checked the security settings and it says the item allows all activity. The options in the drop down menus are blank and cannot be selected. Will I be able to edit this at all, respond if you need more info. Move this to homework hotline if need be, it's actually a work question but I don't know and I don't care more people to help, and who said working in a library was all fun and games.

I don't have Adobe Pro, but can you File --> Save as Text? Or some PDF's I've encountered just don't allow any modifications to be saved. Can you modify her PDF and then print the modifications, or does it absolutely need to be saved?

If all else fails, there's a free PDF editor that I just found: http://www.pdfescape.com/ so maybe that'll work?

Thanks, but I can get into deep shit if I install or tell a patron to install programs onto the computers that have not been approved by the Systems guys. A stupid rule, but thanks anyway. Save as Text would probably alter the font to some degree and she needs the file, its about 200 some pages and I think she wants to send it over the interwebs. I don't know, I only assist, I ask for no motive.

Ahh. Well, this doesn't require any installations (just a good web browser), but it requires < 5mb and < 50 pages, so I guess that can't help you out in this particular case. Sounds like something you might need to forward to the IT/Systems guys then if you don't see any reason for the file to be acting weirdly.

The only thing I could think of since you said the file's not protected is that maybe it was already open with the pdf reader, so that you couldn't save over it after you had made the changes. Maybe you could see if any other Adobe Reader instances are running and terminate them before saving if it acts up again?
