Well, I've recently been being told more and more that I'm weird, or strange for this but it's kind of a ritualistic thing that I picked up from a friend a number of years ago.

When I buy a new pack of smokes, the first thing I do after packing, and opening said pack I will open, then flick the bottom of the pack and which ever cigarette sticks up the most I will pull out and put back in filter side down and dub it my "lucky smoke" which I ultimately smoke last, never ever failing to save it for last.

I haven't seen any actual "luck" come from it (none that is noticeable anyways) however I've seen smokers all over do this, so it cant just be a regional thing, does anyone maybe know where this tradition/superstition originated from?

WWII / Vietnam. They saved the lucky one for last.

It only works to keep you from getting shot / torn apart by shrapnel.

Since I usually bum one of my smokes onto at least one other person, having that lucky (at least in the dark) gives the illusion that I have an odd number of smokes when I actually have an even number of smokes, thereby giving me an easy excuse not to bum the "last one", when it's actually the second to last one. I have only had to do this once, and it was because some jerkoff I knew from high school kept trying to bum one off me.

we have a squatter problem here. just tell them to go buy a pack, make them feel bad, they are lazy and depend on you for what they cannot afford.

i know a few ppl that do this, not too weird

The origin actually involved that the lucky was one that you would bum out, and the purpose was that if everyone did it then there would always be someone to give you a cigarette when you really needed one, yourself.

I'm pretty sure that they're called a lucky because soldiers were given standard issue Lucky Strikes, but that might just be misremembered/hearsay.

Yeah, actually. I made this up ages ago, I'm the originator. I don't do it anymore though because everyone started copying me.
