*edit* I copied this from my facebook wall so...
Hello all who will be reading the next few posts on my wall. I am sure you are all aware of the oilspill in the gulf to atleast some extent, but I doubt you relize the full magnitude of what is going on. Currently, the oil slick has destroyed miles of the beaches in Louissiana and Missisippi, and It has also reached be...aches in Florida. This is just the oil that we see.
The oil plume hasnt entirely rose to the surface, as different oil compositions are vary in weight. The oil plume goes down as far as 150 feet in some places. The gulf was one of the most productive fisheries in the world. It is now destroyed. Even if bp magicly caps the pipe within the next 2 weeks, the oil will neve...r be fully cleaned up. Horrific amounts of oil have entered the marshes on the coast.
These marshes will hold the oil for years, if it even goes away at all. The oil doesnt really degrade, So it has the potential to stay there indefinitly. As far as the ocean is concerned, bp is dumping a solvent that will cause the oil to sink. This improves their public image, but theres a problem. The oil is still th...ere and the solvent is 4 times more toxic to both humans and wildlife than the oil.
You may be saying "Oh, it's in the gulf... it wont affect us" Well your dead wrong... Crude oil will not bond to oxygen mulecules, but as water from the ocean evaporates It absorbes another form of oil molecule that falls with rain, and has almost the exact same affect. Over 50 miles inland in Loisiana rain fall, and ...the ditches, streams, pools, and roads were filled with oil.
The same clouds that pass over Lous. Come over us. The EPA has detected hydrogan sulfide levels of over 2000 ppm in some areas inland, when the "safe" levels are 10-12 ppm. Guess what the oil rain that fell on the crops did.... It killed the plants. It has also killed birds that have bathed in the oil. We are blessed... (I dont use the word often) That we have not had any major storms so far.
The turbulance would stir up the oil, and put it into the currents that are headed to the Atlantic at an even faster speed than it is now.Not even 1/10 of the estimated oil in the resvior has been depleted, and so far there seems to be nothing that bp can do to stop it. This has the potential to destroy the life of th...is planet, includeing us , if it isnt taken care of.
If it continues, and the majority of the crops in america die, we will face MILLIONS of deaths from starvation and sickness, as the fumes from oil can weaken our immune systems. Im not sure about the rest of you, but I am going to speak with my family about stocking surplus food. I relize this may be slight paranoia, ...but I belive it is well deserved when you truely relize the potential that this has to destroy us.
This is the worst manmade disaster, and potentialy the worst disaster period, that the world has ever seen. Worse than global warming, ice ages, nuclear wars, air plution, asteroids, plate tectonics, the magnet reversal of the poles. NONE of them come close (save asteroids possibly) to the potential of what this can be...come. Please, if you get anything out of this, please think ahead for your families sake.
