k so one of my friends is all depressed cuz he realized that our existence has no meaning and is purely incidental and that we have no purpose to fullfill. hes all depressed and shit lol and im trying to convince him that even tho we have no purpose, you still gotta live a good life.

help me out on this gimme some smart reasons cuz this kid won't take anything idiotic as an answer lol

Or we are here to have a life to found out our own meaning of life. The answer is different to everyone, we are basically put here to find out what purpose we serve in this life.

Or you can go the religious route and say that we are put here to serve and trust in the Lord your God.

It is different for everyone. Tell him that he should find something that makes him happy, and then do it.

1. To be as successful as possible and to limit misery as much as possible.

That's it. Doing something that makes him happy is included in the second part of the phrase above.

I wont lie to you, and you shouldn't lie to him, He sounds like a rational person so be straight with him.

If you are looking for a meaning of life in general... You won't find it. You can try but anything you come up with is essentially meaningless as is every action and event in existence.

There is no meaning to life in the big picture... But that doesn't mean we should quit.

Life is like a game, It may be meaningless in the end, and it may not be fun all the time... But it's something to do :)

Tell your friend to stop thinking of life only in the general picture... He should look at it more simply, as an individual human. Sometimes we have to give into what we are (humans), even if it doesn't make sense.
Tell him not to always think rationally... Because without emotions life is not worth living, they are what make it so interesting for us. So do what makes you happy.

Yes it sucks that there is no meaning to life, but it is what we have, there is no other choice.
Try to make the best of the worst i always say :)

And hey if all else fails, he should take a long look at existance... and the next to impossible chance that he is alive today to think about it all. He should feel lucky.

Life as sucky as it can be, is still more fun than nothing. So enjoy it.

Ill have to disagree.

You can say as a living organism that our purpose is to reproduce (basically survive, that is the purpose of organisms. We all evolved with the goal of survival), but as far as the purpose of life itself goes, there is none.
