Executive summary:
Darpa is funding a project to research treatments (shots?) that can be used to simulate what happens when certain mammals go into hibernation. It's first being experimented on pigs since they have a similar cardiovascular system to humans. If it works then some possible applications would include preventing blood loss during major injuries which could greatly extend the timeframe that the victim needs for medical attention.
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/12/pentagon-zombie-pigs-first-then-hibernating-gis/I've heard about this. They're trying to use Hydrogen Sulfide gas as a hibernation agent, which has been successfully trialed in rats. Nice post.
