Allrighty, so I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee sport, and I need to do a few things to it. Problem is, I dont know what im doing mechanic wise, I'm a computer technician not a mechanic. However both my father and brother are good with mechanics, but my dad is away for a few days, and he's always too busy to do it. So, I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me and help me out, I want to do it myself as I wish to learn these things, along with the fact I have access to just about every tool a mechanic needs.

Now heres the questions.

1. How do I adjust my emurgency brake to work again? I can drive with in on fully, it used to work, but ive driven on it a few times without realizing and it slowly stopped working, my dad says I just need to adjust it, but hasnt had the time to do it for me / show me how. If you could supply a site with pictures of how to or instructions, I'll tip some FG.

2. How do I replace my springs / shocks? I'm hitting bumps really rough, and my dad told me the springs or whatever are shot, and I need to replace them. He says he has them, but yet again, no time, so I was thinking of doing it myself. This I might wait, because it might be too complicated for me, if it is just say so, otherwise advice on how to do it / pictures would really help, fg tip of course if helpful. ^_^

If you think these would be too complicated for me just say so. I'm not completely dumb when it comes to cars, but I'm not experienced haha.

Thanks.

I'll try to help you out.

For the Ebrake, there is usually a screw found inside the plastic housing that holds the Ebrake lever. Try removing all the plastic trim around the brake (if not all, at least the one pointing away from the Ebrake, towards the back of the car, on the back of the Ebrake assembly). In there you should see a screw which is most likely holding a tightened wire (this screw will most likely be pointing towards the car, so get in the back seat with a screwdriver in your hand). Twist the screw and see how the Ebrake feels. Once you feel it starting to grip, keep turning the screw in that direction until the brake is at a point where it makes around 5 to 6 clicks to fully engage.

As for the springs and shocks, this can be tricky do you yourself unless you have a spring compressor. It's a tool you use to compress the spring and keep it compressed in order to remove it off the car. Also, you might have trouble removing the big nut which is located on the top of the struts (the big nut you see on both sides under the hood). Unlike the Ebrake fix, I've never attempted this myself, so I can't tell you much. There are most likely lots of guides on the web for it if you feel you're up for it.

My personal suggestion would be just to wait until your dad returns, the work together with him. This way you'll learn without much worry of doing something wrong or breaking something.
