Alright, so I'm wondering if anyone knows about installing a tv over a fireplace.

A walk-through guy said a plasma tv was definitely a bad idea because of the heat.

So...I was figuring a projector was a good idea, but after a little research it looks like a projector is basically just good for watching dvds as the bulb will burn out quick with just casual tv watching all the time (and the bulbs run ~$200).

Anyways, if you know if a lcd or w.e is good..or if a projector is the best idea, or any other suggestions, lmk. Thanks!

projection tvs are huge and thus not a good choice for a wall hanging.

If heat is an issue, I wouldn't put any TV over the fireplace.

are you worried about heat coming through the brick fireplace (which would affect the back of the tv)? or from the heat spit out by the actual fire (that would pass in front of the screen). If it is the former, then some sort of simple insulation between the wall and the tv should do the trick. If its the latter, then you might be SOL.

when he said projection I'm pretty sure he meant through the use of a projector unit....no like a DLP television... cause that wouldn't hang nicely like a chandelier at all..haha

You can't just put the TV somewhere else? Like the wall next to the fireplace?
Seems like the glare when you have a fire going would suck anyway.

I think you should be fine as long as you have some airflow around your fireplace so the heat spreads uniformly through the room. Do some research on what temps the tv can safely handle.

put a thermometer above the fireplace for a few days and keep an eye on it. id bet a considerable amount of heat rises out of it. is this a gas fireplace or wood? different kinds of wood burn at different temps, keep that in mind. you burn something hard like mahagony or rosewood and youll get the fire up to 700 deg easy!

It's a gas fireplace. We won't have it on while watching tv. Most more 'modern' homes nowadays are being built with a bire place as the center, making the logical place for the tv above the fireplace. I think a tv is going to be fine above it, only thing might be that we have to tilt it down a bit for the best viewing angle. The wall above the fireplace already has wire-ends that go behind the wall to hook up on the side.
