At this point it seems logical to focus on understanding the properties of these propulsion systems before we begin to apply them. I think the mentality of "we have a use for this so lets find out if it works" is strictly worse than saying "let's find out how it works then apply it to something relevant."

mm...I'm pretty sure space travel is definitely not a priority. Its costly, it has a low success rate, and has almost no useful yield. Poverty and education should be our number one priority -- 2/3 of this world can't even dream of the luxuries most of us have.
