I think a virus that would cause a massive outbreak of the living dead ending the human race would have to do with science.

mmm...you know what on that note, lets talk about flying rugs and genies as they are some what just as pertinent to science as zombies are.

It could be possible that someone somewhere used a machine that changed all cell phones to transmit a signal that scrambles your brain and resets it to its most primal state where you just run around in the streets causing as much destruction as possible. Then, they all "evolve" into more "intelligent" zombies that talk to the people that aren't zombies or "non-phonies" in their dreams using telepathic images. They will tell them to all flock to one area where they plan to murder them in a public display to all the "phonies". Luckily, one man will pack a school bus filled with explosives and then kill himself so the zombies can't read his mind and know of his plan. He will then leave clues to tell the people before him that they need to do it. They will realize what happens, use the last phone on earth that doesn't have the zombie-signal to call a certain number that triggers the school bus's explosives that kill all of the zombies.

But I doubt it.

A nuclear apocalypse is much more believable.
