i've heard that singularities are treated as having infinite densities.

there are two types of infinities, potential(ongoing process) and true(completed).

are their densities treated as infinite because they continually consume mass, or because they are truly infinite? realistically, do atoms not have volumes?

also, physical circles, do they have an infinite number of sides/ corners? if you were to zoom into the nano scale, why wouldn't atoms be treated as such?

conceptually of course, if you were to examine a curve of a function, then it would be infinitely divided. is the general consensus that reality is also the same way or am i thinking about it too much?

I'm open for the thing, but don't believe in infinity.
Maybe there is something that never ends, like circles as you quoted, but nah. Directly nothing can be infinite imo. happy.gif

The fundamental laws of Physics are theorized to break down in the presence of singularities thus they are believed to have exactly zero volume. This means that a singularity's infinity is divergent and incalculable.

Circles do not have an infinite number of corners, only an infinite number of tangent planes.

Infinity is one of the odd paradoxes of life. Humans, as a rule, do not, and can not comprehend infinity. Why? Because everything on earth and everything that we know has a finite of space, length, and volume. The idea of something truly being endless baffles us. Well.. me at least. I try not to think about it too much.

in theory or from a pure mathematical perspective, infinity does exist...

i read an article about black holes and its said they actually do have infinite densities. essentially they take up 0 volume, and thus the limit of D as V icon_pointr.gif 0 (according to M/V) their density is infinite. further, at the "point of no return" their pull of gravity is also infinite.

I thought you dealt with chaos?. Infinity should seem so bad laugh.gif

Regarding some of the more technical discussion, part of the trouble with treating theoretical (explanatory) objects as real (out there in the world, tangible) objects is that terms, functions, etc. are often tools for expression of deep thinking. NOt everything we can imagine exists outside of our imagination. Otherwise my son would never cry, I'd never get hungry, and I'd be able to fly. There are a lot of cases where what we think up doesn't match anything outsides of our discussions and gestures, and there are a lot of cases where even very abstract mathematics match up with what there is "out there" in the world. I believe we should keep contant watch over our thinking, because sometimes we can confuse the tools for the shed, so-to-speak.

Bearing in mind that for these things, sometimes new branches of mathematics or physics need to be wrought. Infinite, perhaps, but what kind of meaning is attached to it? smile.gif

what do you mean what kind of meaning is attached?

If this had been created 2 days ago I could have asked my physics professor about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Cramer
Didn't go into the subject very much with a class on mechanics.
