No, physics says we cannot go faster than light speed. tongue.gif

Its keyword says. Its a Law, but its still not proven. There is very real possibilty that FTL travel can be achieved, in 100 years our technology will FAR FAR exceed what Enstein had when he devoped his Theory, and in turn the Laws. We should be more intelligent too.

first, faster than light is impossible, based on today's knowledge, if there is something faster than light, I doubt that it would take only 30 years to reach this speeds, I think an antimatter engine or magnetically propelled ship would be the our first technology to even reach speeds 1/100 the speed of light, which is still a ridiculously fast speed, sound travels 625 mph, light is about 186000 miles per SECOND ( also about [3600 * 186000 = 669600000] miles per hour), so seeing as reaching the speed of sound was an enormous accomplishment and the fastest we've ever been is 2070 mph (so a little more than 3 times the speed of sound), this also makes me believe reaching the speed of sound is impossible. So I now think we will only ever reach 1/10000 or less the speed of light.

Also many theorosists believe faster than light would make you go back in time (based on the theory of relativity, read about it, it will enlighten you)

agreed, although Einstein had many rules that he said if they they were broken, then his entire theory was false, and none of them have been broken, so I think Einstein has it pretty much correct (although there may be some tweaking here and there, like progression of the atom theory

nothing can surpass lightspeed because everything has mass.

light has little mass called photons.

t = t2 / 1 - sqrt(v/c)^2
i think

velocity above speed of light would be negative, therefore u wud have imaginary numbers. but rules are meant to b broken. relativity broke some of newton's rules. newton was m = m'(v*t). but relativity follows the correspondence rules since newton dealt with low velocity and einstiien dealt with > than were used to velocity. prolly in the future ppl will come up with more theories. FTL is pretty crazy tho. time travel

Correction, we will generally speaking be a stupider race -- with more knowledge. and I think alot of people here over estimate our capabilities

The fastest a chemical rocket can push a spacecraft is about 41,000 MPH (65,983.104 kph or 18.32 Km per second), such as New Horizons. After Jupiter's gravity assist it will be going 47,000 MPH (75,639.168 kph) or 13.05 Miles per second!
http://www.theconservativevoice.com/articles/article.html?id=11379 1 832 m / s

The fastest unmanned spacecraft to date is Helios II at 254,276 kilometers per hour (70.63 Km per second), which translates to 158,000 MPH or about 44 miles per second!
http://www.nsbe.org/techcorner/maximumvelocity.php 70 630 m /s

The fastest manned spacecraft to date is Apollo 10 before re-entry at 24,759 mph (6.9 Miles per hour), which tranlates to 39,846 kilometers per hour (11.068 Km per second)!
http://www.nsbe.org/techcorner/maximumvelocity.php 11 068 m / s

speed of light = 299 792 458 m / s

meaning speed of light is about 4200 times faster than our fastest rocket (the second one)...
sorry, but before you talk about FTL, try to even reach 1/4 of speed of light. You guys are over estimating our capabilities ALOT.

Thats our capibilities right now, certainly we will have better technology in the future. Tech is still progressing at a very fast rate. I never said it would be easy to achive, just I think its possible.

Okay lets think of it this way. The only way we can increase our speed right now is just burn more fuel at one time -- which is not really feasible since you can only pack a certain amount of weight to let the rocket go. Also, I agree that our technology will rapidly grow, but I don't think you understand the magnitude of what achieving light speed means -- not in 100 years, not in 500. I'd try 1000+ years....we're not even 1/4000 the speed of light yet, what makes you think we have the technology for this.

Also, factor number two, as you reach light speed lengths contract (on top of you going hella fast)...how do you suppose we avoid space rocks ? Especially if they're like the size of your fist -- you're never going to be able to see, and if you collide with that rock at such high speeds, I'm afraid you've just punctured a nice hole in your ship. And there are tons of those rocks every where in space...

Light speed or even speeds close to C are just impossible for us to handle. We don't have the sheer power it takes to achieve those speeds, we can't take that kind of acceleration and if we do, we're going to be colliding into small objects that will completely tear the whole ship apart in seconds.

The key to space travels isn't gaining directly the speed of light! Why won't you guys understand this...? It's impossible and would take too much energy. The key is to bend teh fukin' spacetime.
