Given the size of the universe it seems nearly impossible that life beyond the earth doesn't exist. I'd argue the same thing for intelligent life. It probably is exceedingly rare though, especially intelligent life. There's bound to be other life in our galaxy but depending on how rare it is we could be the only intelligent species in the galaxy.
