As far as I understood from what I've read (and I did look around, I like to see a few sides before I decide where I stand) the people who did the math used known cosmic events (the same ones used as the basis for the LHC experiment) and did studies as well as all their crazy physics tests, and were able to actually predict the outcome. They said the chances of these micro black holes manifesting were virtually nil to begin with, but if they did, they would not even be detectable on most levels, let alone harmful.
One thing that stuck in my mind, though it's pure speculation, was that because we know so little about the sub-molecular level's physics, (quantum physics, in other words) that there could be mass amounts of these micro black holes constantly around us at all times. Following my train of thought here, just as a purely fyi tidbit, most of our universe is actually made up of "space"...that is, in terms we can grasp, the distance between two electron levels in a single atom would be akin to 20km or more!
Of course of course, but what good is knowing the distance between two atoms or two electrons, when a rather large percentage of people do not even know how to read a map!
