It's OK that math isn't your strong suit, lots of people have trouble with it. However, you don't typically find those people trying to present mathematical arguments.

Those "hints" was everything a person with some understanding of optics/light scattering would need to figure out where these patterns are coming from (as you stated you know how that thing is built, that would have been the other requirement)
That was not an attempt to trap anyone it was an attempt to be thought-provoking.
