Solar Flare and CME monitoring is very important. Not in an end of the world Scenario per'se, but Strong X class flares can and have caused problems with electrical systems and components here on Earth. Some Interesting Facts going back to even the 1800's giving electrical shocks to Telegraph operators and even starting Fires on telegraph wire systems. Back in 1989 One CME knocked out electricity to Quebec by overloading Transmission lines. Mostly they just give us some really awesome Aurora's

Yep, and we're in Solar Cycle 24 right now. It has been picking up quite a bit these last few months with some very large X-class flares.
