A lucid dream, in simplest terms, is a dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. The term was coined by the Dutch psychiatrist and writer Frederik van Eeden (1860–1932).[1]

A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (DILD) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes it is a dream, while a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state, with no apparent lapse in consciousness.

Lucid dreaming has been researched scientifically, and its existence is well established.

I used to play around with lucid dreams all the time. In my experience the best way to get a lucid dream is going to sleep for about 3-4 hours so that you are in the deepest REM cycle and then have your alarm set so it wakes you up. Stay away for 5 minutes, maybe go take a piss or get a drink so that you don't just fall right back asleep. Then lay back down close your eyes and clear your mind. Many of my lucid dreams start off with what sound like explosions for a few seconds and then BAM I'm dreaming. I've had some very wierd experiences with this in fact the other day I had an out of body experience where I was floating in the air above my body which was fast asleep on the couch and I was spinning in circles just looking down at myself. 'Twas wierd.

I saw the movie Inception a few days ago and it made a good point - trying to remember how you got into a situation is a very effective reality check.

All of my recent lucid dreams have been false awakenings...so be sure to remember your reality checks as soon as you "wake up"!

What do your hands look like in dreams? I've probably had 30 or so lucid dreams, but I've either never looked at them or can't remember.

The most I can remember (and this may not even be from a dream) is that my hands seemed almost...flickring and shiny...like a projected image looks if you accidentally bump the projector.

Yea thats common. The thing is for some reason a certain part of the brain is used for identifying objects with sight has ALOT of trouble identifying your Hands and face in a dream. For example when i saw my hands in a dream i was missing both index fingers and one of my thumbs was shorter then the other. And since i so "Hand looking" reality checks constantly in real life, when i say my hands my subconscious mind said "This is a dream, my hands dont really look like this!" Same with you Face. Although NEVER try to look in a mirror in a dream. It will end up making you have a nightmare and lose lucidity.
