C'mon, they can't just assume stuff like that.

Yes it is possible to make something that would mimic a zombie but it wouldn't be dead.

There are known parasites that can take control of its host and the host become mindless and usually end up getting eaten so that the parasite can go into it's adult stage in it's new host. If we were able to engineer a way to change the behavior of the parasite and allow it to take over the host and hunger for flesh then you will make a zombie.

We have already engineered some viruses in a way where when the viruses inject there own DNA into a living cell to reproduce; they instead create an anti-viral like cell and/or a cure.

We just have to rely heavily on bio-engineering and hopefully one day we can fully understand how to manipulate things on a molecular level.

Yeah toxoplasmosis can only come in contact with humans when you mess around with feline feces. You may contract toxoplasmosis but our immune system protects us from it. The only people who are vulnerable to this are pregnant women and AIDS victims. The symptoms of the parasite vary. Insanity is a rare symptom btw. Most women who contract this usually become more energetic and outgoing and social. In some cases women crave sexual interaction.
