Haha, actually a quick riddle, figure out how I'm making 2=1:

1^2 = 1 ..................(1 times)
2^2 = 2 + 2 .............(2 times)
3^2 = 3 + 3 + 3 ........(3 times)
4^2 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 ...(4 times)
so,
x^2 = x + x + x + x....(x times)

Now if we take the derivative of both sides, we get
2x = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1... (x times)
therefore, 2x = x, then 2(x/x) = 1  so 2 = 1.

Right? :D, actually the answers really easy but its some brain fodder :P

Nope, that part is perfectly logical. That is not wrong to say.

Yeah, I dunno what I was thinking. I haven't been exposed to a even slightly difficult math for about a year now, so I'm pretty rusty.

x^2=x+x+x...

doesn't work for zero

also, when you reach

2x=x

you can't divide out the x, because you're eliminating zero as an answer

i don't know whether there's a connection between the two

It does work for zero, 0^2 = 0+0+0 (technically zero times, but its not wrong)

2x=x

you can't divide out the x, because you're eliminating zero as an answer

mm... part of the answer, but you're not encompassing the entire reason why this doesn't work

I'll give you guys a hint, graph both sides of the equal sign :)

yea simple brain farts...happens to me too, anyways, the answer is that x + x + x + x (x times) is not a continuous, and therefore not a differentiable function. x + x + x + x are not variables anymore, they become real numbers, and the derivative of real numbers always equals 0, not 1 :P

how is that not continuous?

No....where do you see me dividing by zero here, I'm not dividing anything by zero.

... well with your thing I was tired and never took the time to read fully, but in the usual algebraic expression to make 1=2 everything works out except they try to divide by zero and make you not notice it...

however with imaginary numbers, you can.

x + x + x + x isn't even a function, its a plot of real numbers because x is not a variable. X^2 has varying x values, while on the other side of the equal sign, x + x + x + x etc... are just constants. You can't differentiate that.
