I understand what you are saying, the advent of computers has ushered in the modern age and is the only viable path forward for the human race. But its interesting, you are saying computers are necessary based on the world you see around you today, those who argue computers are unnecessary look to the past and see that the world 50 years ago ran perfectly fine without a computer chip of any kind, and I in turn could say we lived and existed without technology at all at one point.
The point is, technology is all convenience, no technology is necessary -- thus how do you prove which is most useful? The technology of today provides more convenience than did the technology of yesterday, but that of yesterday is the backbone of technology today...there has to be a more clear definition of 'useful', because it is vague you can interpret it how ever you like and then we wind up with debates that go no where.
Though, if you had to pick a single most 'useful' invention (my interpretation of useful is how many places such an invention can be applied) then wouldn't the invention of the indian/arabic number system clearly be up top? If I had to pick a second, it would be the light bulb, how do we even start making more advancements if we do not have the convenience of light? (again, its applications are endless).
I think this topic needs to be rethought
