ok, well we've purposely crash landed probes onto planetary surfaces in order to learn more about them. Whos to say they havent sent a "probe" to tell the ground and air composition to see if its worth inhabiting (maybe they breathe methane in our world isnt right). Additionally, mistakes are made, even on our world. In the past there was confusion with the english and metric system, and the result was a 4billion$ satelite/rocket missing the landing spot on mars.

as for alien, if they have the technology to reach us from million light years away, i dont think us government could be able to shoot them down, i dont think they will crash for no reason either
