That's not a close encounter, I can't reach out and touch it. This thread sucks.

Be thankful you cannot reach out and touch it

You would be dead

a new research article from the rosetta team is available at

Prebiotic chemicals—amino acid and phosphorus—in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

from the announcement of it on the esa site:

Rosetta’s comet contains ingredients for life

The Rosina-DFMS instrument on Rosetta has detected ingredients considered important for life as we know it on Earth, in the coma of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.
One important detection was that of the simple amino acid glycine (top, C2H5NO2), a biologically important organic compound commonly found in proteins. Phosphorus was also detected (bottom, P), a key element in all living organisms. It is found in the backbone of DNA and RNA, in cell membranes, and in adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism.

OSIRIS narrow-angle camera image taken on 1 June 2016, when Rosetta was 20 km from the centre of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. The scale is 0.36 m/pixel at the comet.

Not sure if this has been addressed but almost all of the photos of this thing show the diffuse dust being projected in at least 3 opposing directions,
but comet tails of antiquity only ranged from acute to right angles.
Is there an explanation other than solar wind or sun pressure to explain why I am seeing this?
Not all of these shots can be silhouettes & my flat brain doesn't do pictures well.

don't forget that the comet and the dust surrounding it seen in three dimensional space and also how close rosetta is to the comet and the position from which the picture is taken - the 'tail' is larger/broader than the comet, so if a picture is taken just in front of the comet (from the sun side) dust is seeing like a halo surrounding the comet, ie projected in all directions
since this comet is not a (near) round object, the rotational position also plays a role

That seems fair enough. Closed the gap far enough for detailed pictures, are there any with the entire tail? Can this be viewed from earth?

One would expect to see the tail at this intersection.

just some quick info to show how difficult ground based observations are for this particular comet:
