Maybe the brain must defragmentate so we sleep and the process gives us dreams...

Think of sleep as replenishing the organs, overall body, etc

Can be compared to a laptop/computer, you can't leave a regular laptop/computer on in a room-temperature room for long periods of time without turning it off for cooling. And yes, I realize you can leave a computer on for a long while via adequate cooling, etc, that's why I said "regular computer/laptop / room-temperature room"

But the computer will eventually be shut off, no?

It was just a rough comparison, it has the same principles.

why don't you guys talk it over while i'm sleeping

O_o

why does your body need sleep?

I've heard of truckers going bonkers with too much caffeine trying to stay awake and drive too much.

People can literally go insane from sleep deprivation. Why does this happen?

i think it has something to do with chemical buildup, either in your brain or in other parts of your body.
once it reaches a certain level you get sleepy and your body naturally tries to go into a state of mini-hibernation to allow the moving and dismantling of whatever chemicals are causing the problem

on a normal basis i go about 3-5 days outta 7 without sleep or very little sleep, mainly because i have no need for it, i see it mainly as a waste of time, but yes its needed for alot...
some are:
process thoughts,
takes care of things unknowingly,
and its just set in stone that around night time your "internal clock" as they say it, is turning you off,
plus they say its a mini death, time for your "soul" to rest,
i think its needed purely for processing thoughts and to relieve your soul's duty to carry on to the next day.

also
while awake the body probably can't replenish the organs needed because you are running to fast to do it...
slowing them down during sleep is needed for this.
