Of course you can, your outcome is not dependent of length in the slightest and his assumption that it is is silly.
What I can't wrap my head around is why in the hell we are talking about a sunset and prospective when he still hasn't told us the size and location of our sun. How our earth orbits, how our own planet spins or doesn't, etc. Why and how can you so logically explain what the perspective sight of something will be if you don't even know the other contributing factors?!
Maybe you dont understand "prospective" because thats not a real word, i'm talking about how your optical 3d perspective is different from a 2 d side view drawing.
See flat ceilings are 100% flat (especially in 2d side views) but they appear to go down because of 3d optical perspective, its not really going down is it?

See the difference?
even if this hallway was 3000 miles long, you wouldn't see all 3000 miles of it, maybe you'd see about 100 miles of it , but just because you can't see it doesnt mean its not there - it would just be hidden behind the optically raising plane of the floor.
This is why radar can see farther than your eyes can, its not seeing over the curve of the earth - its just seeing what you can not.
