Let's assume you're right here on earth.
What about in, say, Andromeda. Maybe there's a planet there that houses life - only they have 2.5 million years of evolutionary process on us.
Take for example, an ant. You see an ant, do you stop to chat with it? Not unless you're crazy. Do you really care or wonder what it's thinking? Probably not unless you're an entomologist.
Now think of us as those ants to that other species. Why haven't we had contact with any "aliens?" Maybe just for that reason - we're viewed as irrelevant creatures in our own little colonies, so unadvanced that we're nothing but a mere species to study and spectate while bigger, better life forms are being at a higher level of existence.
Just something to ponder.
I tell this to my mom, everytime she kills a fly or a spider

As for the topic at hand. Earth is governed by a select few.
If science is finaly able to achieve moving into space, I believe those few will be 1st to go.
The only way to counter this is, if the ppl in charge of the whole process aren't selfish, egotistical and dont get "persuaded" by those select few, by their money and power.
I can repeat what others said, but theres no need.
Most of the posters are agreeing that we have yet some evolving to do as humans, before we can achieve such goals.
Furthermore, I could add more insight. I've done so in other threads, this one however doesn't seem fit for it.
