From a biological standpoint we are continuously evolving to better survive the harsh conditions we are placed in. I am surprised we are not born with a hard hat and tool box.
I don't really think that's how it works.
People don't mutate to better survive the conditions that they are in. Genes mutate. Mine, yours, what we pass our kids, etc. Almost all of these mutations are random. Just through the random happenings of life would people with unfavorable mutations die (such as a humanoid born 60,000 years ago with a mutation that made it so he couldn't run from the tiger). Since really nobody is dying anymore from the easy stuff, such as tigers, evolution is pretty much at a stand still in humans because people with unfortunate mutations don't die off. People will pass on 'bad' mutations as well as 'good' mutations (bad and good used in reference to things such as escaping a tiger).
Here is another example. Wolf genes mutate randomly. Some have long noses, some short. Some have six paws, some five. Some have thicker coats, others don't. The noses and the paws don't really play into survival that much, but if you have a thicker coat of fur in the wild you're going to have an easier time surviving. Therefore, there is an increased chance that wolf will survive and be able to reproduce, and there is a greater chance that those wolves with not-even-average but lesser manes of hair will die and not reproduce. Eventually, thick coats of fur become the norm because there are so many more wolves from that lineage of genes running around still mating, while wolves with average or less-than-average manes die more often just cause of their coats and are then not able to reproduce and pass on that mutation.
