really depends what is meant by " immortality "
in a sense , all life today is immortal , in that it has been continuously here since its inception , billions of years ago
genes make copies of themselves , and even tho the original gene may perish , its copy may live on to copy itself again and again

dont forget  that you dont have any of the cells that you were born with anymore
what you have are copies of those cells ......

when you're 30 , you wont have any of the cells that made up your body when you were 20
does that mean you died ?  are you still alive ?
can you say that what happened to the 20 yr old you  , happened to you , when you're 30 ?
because nothing of that 20yr old remains

from an evolutionary standpoint , we need a mechanism that allows adaption to changes in our environment
what was good for life 2 billion years ago , isnt good now

but there has been an uninterrupted chain of cells from then to now , ending with every cell in your body
a life that expands over many bodies , that changed and improved itself ,and that is still alive today

if that isnt real immortality , i dont know what is

memory is the single component of what constitutes a person's identity.

the composite of all the cells in your body don't need to survive for a person to be immortal, only information.

the goal is for each identity, i.e. each individual, to become immortal.

We die because we were born. Its not our fault we have life. All life ends.

seems flawed , as then losing ones memory would equate to death

also , the mechanism which allows for adaption , operates by creating new bodies , and brains
by limiting life to a single body , you lose your ability to adapt

as time goes by , the environment changes , other life adapts to it
5million years ago our ancestors were chimpanzee like creatures
in 5 million years time , our descendants will be something other than human
and they will look upon humans as we look upon chimps

and if you are in the same body still , you wont be the most advanced and intelligent creature anymore
in 50 million years , your life is the same , but life that adapts has changed and improved

no , the goal is not to remain in the same body
life has got it right , and billions of years of uninterrupted success is proof

you're not considering the fact that the power of technology will provide adaptability. our brains will almost certainly be upgradable. intelligence will increase exponentially.

dna is the only reliable technology used by life so far
some hypothetical as yet unknown technology isnt a sound basis to make a case for abandoning billions of years of proven success

its evolutionarily difficult to design. just think that its a huge jump when you consider that all other life so far lives with about one generation at a time to conserve resources. there are other reasons: it could become a stagnant gene pool, overpopulation would kill us off, we'd become prone to long term decay from unrepairable body parts/organs

the fact is that everything in the universe undergoes change and death is just one of them that we like to accentuate, probably in unconscious defense of our own selves

At last I can agree with you on something. Very well stated.

Why do we die?
Why do we age?

What is aging of cells, and why does it happen?

Why dont we live in a moment where cells have evolved to not age anymore?
Why didnt the cells have yet evolved to immortality?

Why?

Who says in the future our cells will not evolve to a point of regenerating themselves and we never age?
Why do we grow? Why dont we just stay babies? (evolution I know) So why didnt we evolve enough to reach immortality?

Why do we live in this moment of evolution and not another?

if im correct cells dont age. They only stay around for so long and are replaced by new ones

anything not stationary in time and subject to entropy is aging

You would not like an immortal body, accidents will always happen and you don't want to be stuck under rock or something like this.
The important thing to remember is our spirit is immortal, physical death and birth are the same event (when your current body will die, you will be borned in an other).
About age, science can help us age slower, and we will probably evolve enough to have bodies that don't age past 18... if we stop put all the money in non-sense wars, we could use more for research, and eventually one day stop cells degeneration that is currently happening to us after25 years or so.
