As to purpose - What if our purpose is to reproduce. As in we are here to merely go through resources. You said we are killing this planet, but what if this is our duty. In this ever expanding universe, infinite in every direction, what if there were other races, like us, that are progressing, like us, and their duty, like ours, is to go through resources and continue advancing. You could think of it as recycling.
As for the ancient civilisations - We can't really be sure of how intelligent they were. Everything at this moment is speculation and theories. Sure, there are documentaries etc.. Some/many of which may be remarkably acurate. However, what if some/many of them were biased (most likely this option). When I say biased, I don't necesarily mean to neglect information they have in a type of conspiracy or something.. but what if they're missing something. One theory that is missing a big thing, sparks another theory that sparks 10 more and so on, but all missing something big. Truth is, we don't know how reliable our sources are.
