Depending on who you ask, it's actually possible that the universe functions sort of like that.
Think about it- if there is some fundamental point where you can have two different points in time or space with no points between the two, then you could represent the state of the universe at any given point as a really, really, really, really (etc), binary string with 0 representing a point in space being empty and 1 representing a point being occupied. The rules by which the state changes are the laws of physics with constants (such as the gravitational constant) being defined at the program's start with a (truly) random chance of legal state changes occurring each iteration. Basically, the universe very well may just be the most powerful computer ever.
Since we are using the word computer as an adjective to metaphorically describe the complex nature of the universe. Both man made words and concepts (computer and universe).
We observe the universe, and by natural physiological process we simply associate it with something we know (this is how our brain works). The universe itself is not a computer, even if you perceive it to function as one.
It is your brain that is the most powerful computer ever.
