you could but you would need a way of producing artificial gravity to make up for the mass difference, and it would need to be protected by a barrier of some kind. the design would be too complicated to be worthwhile however.

he said smaller not less massive

the point was to create it in a workable structure you would have to create your own gravity somehow. it would look like a scale model earth on the outside but the core wouldn't be like a real planet. thats the only way i see this ever becoming a realistic thing.

well this makes no sense.

but anyway, humankind will never need to engineer one anyway, not for ourselves at least

how doesn't it make sense?

and colonizing space without a hospitable planet would make this type of construction at least worthy of looking into. at the end of the day ppl traveling for years in empty space would be much more comfortable moving around in a earth-like environment rather than a standard ship design of today.

A giant ship and a small planet evoke two ENTIRELY different mental images. The idea of us building and moving a planet into deep space is completely unfathomable with our current technologies, whereas at least a large ship can be imagined, even if moving it wouldn't be that fuel efficient (Hohmann transfers are very slow and would only work far enough to get us out of the solar system, and after that it'd take generations to reach the next closest star).

ya there is no way it could happen with current tech and it would be a waste realistically even with the tech. the only way i see it ever being created would be as an experiment in deep space colonization. a sphere does promote a lot of problems though so a half/half construction would be more realistic since it would be much more manageable to create an earth-like environment on a flat surface.

like a smaller version of our earth and just sail it anywhere in space

with todays technology, no..

construct out of what? seems like terraforming another planet would make more sense seeing as how it would take multiple planets worth of rescources to make this.

technically yes and it would be simple to actually figure out what to do. It would just take a lot of energy adn resources to actually do it, but earth could very easily be built from scratch considering everything is governed by laws and doesn't have to be set into motion by osmething special. The only thing that would prohibit it would be the gravity and energy source so I would say no to those, but a full size would be easy.
