Well there are people who can't feel pain at all...makes life more dangerous for them.

i don't think it will ever be definitive unless we find a better way of testing pain. a lot of the test used for this are so different its hard to tell what is more reliable. like the top link was mechanical pressure on the achilles tendon.

Pain tolerance might be mental... maybe... i don't know anything on that...

However, i know that importance of injuries is physical.
If your bones get used to receive impacts... they will become thicker and stronger.
If your skin is used to be hit, slapped, etc... it will take more damage before it bleeds.

I don't know if you've seen a t.v. show called : Guinea Pig.
Well, in one of the episodes, this guy goes and see a martial artist who practices a weird martial art...
The goal... slapping your back with 3 different object... the 3rd one (the worst) is a bamboo stick.

The guinea pig starts bleeding after 2-3 slaps...
The martial artist... after 15 minutes of slapping doesn't even start to have a "red" skin. Not even irration

I found that awesome.
