first, i do NOT believe the world will end in 2012. but i want to hear some explanations on how mayans, etc could predict something like this (tho they didnt). ill go first.

the mayans and egyptians had a few things in common. both had a fascination with and incredible ability to measure cosmic alignment, and both built pyramids.what if the mayans knew something about gamma ray bursts? ofc they wouldnt know what they were, just that they came in cycles, sometimes worse than others. if their culture still remembered from the last age of aquarius (happens every 8,500 years, a really long time to keep a document except on something like a pyramid...). they way a gamma ray burst works is it somes from a black hole an a straight "narrow" line. we would have to be very unlucky to get hit directly by a bad one, but it is very possible. these bursts give off an equal amount of energy possesed by the entire earth every few minutes. there is absolutely no way to shield something from it (unless you have another black hole blocking you). luckily the alignment of our spiral galaxy shields us from the supermassive black hole at milky way's center, these would have to come from other galaxies that are in a perfect line with our solar system. is it possible that mayans could predict something that we barely understand even now? keep in mind they were thousands of years ahead of their time, but how many thousands? were pyramids supposed to be continuously built to shelter people from these bursts? the emissions from these supermassive balck holes are the most powerful concentration of energy know in the universe. the only event that would be greater would be the big bang itself. (dont know about supernovas but my book doesnt mention them)

when was the last time a gamma ray burst happened?
imo the big bang is a load of crap.
and as for "could the mayans predict this?" i, myself, do not believe so.

If i remember correctly, scientists believe that earth was maybe hit by one around 450 million years ago. Not sure about it though.
Then how do you explain the creation of the universe?
And i dont believe that either.

there are several gamma ray bursts going on right now, and these are the semi local ones we have found. yes they are rare, but they happen. i doubt they could predict this, but then again look at the incredible alignment of pyramids to the stars and how far ahead of their time the mayans and egyptians were. these people studied the cosmos in incredible fine detail.

Just to be sure: Gamma ray bursts occur when extremely large stars (like 30x the size of our sun) die, right?

Yes, Akhmenaput noticed one day that the sausage he left on the tip of the pyramid got roasted. He told of this to Tupkhamen who said "u must be gamma burst" staring up into the sky...

gamma ray bursts happen when a black hole sucks in too much too fast. there simply isnt room for all of the matter in the accretion disck (outside of the event horizon) and emits a blast of parcticles (gamma rays) at almost the speed of light that can stretch for hundreds of light years. luckily the bursts travel in a direct line from the poles of the black hole outward. if one of these bursts hit the earth, we are DONE FOR. there is no protection from this, one of these bursts emits the same amount of energy contained on the entire earth in a few minutes. WOW!

pretty much.

Ahh yes that's right :) Yup that would definitely reduce earth's population by a couple of billions.
I find it hard to believe that the mayans could predict this.
